Over the last couple of months the Indian car market was particularly weak. Not anymore! The Maruti Alto is back up to 24,422 sales in November, its strongest volume in 4 months. At #2 the Maruti Swift sees the effect of the new generation now available and delivers an amazing 17,273 units this month, that’s more than the Alto last month and the highest volume ever for the Swift nameplate! I believe it is also the highest monthly volume ever reached by any model other the Alto in India (if you know this for sure please confirm).
Maruti monopolises the podium and places the Wagon R at #3 with a robust 12,069 sales, it is #2 year-to-date at 135,228 units. The Tata Indica/Vista stays strong in 4th place and lodges its third consecutive month above 10,000 monthly units. It is followed by the Maruti DZire also benefitting from the new generation, up 9 spots on October to 10,403 sales. Below the Hyundai i10, the Toyota Etios breaks its record with 8,271 sales this month including 4,328 Liva hatchbacks, up to #7.

There are a few other good performers this month. The Hyundai Eon has its best month so far at #9 and 7,418 sales, the Tata Nano is up 7 spots on October thanks to its ‘relaunch’ to #11 and 6,401 units, its best volume since last May and the Mahindra Scorpio lodges its best volume in over 2 years at #16 and 4,646 sales.
New models perform relatively well: the Mahindra XUV500 is up another 10 spots to #27 and 1,637 units and the Skoda Rapid, a Fabia sedan based on the VW Vento exclusive to India, ranks #38 with 957 sales for its very first month in the country.
