2,309,874 new cars were registered in India in calendar year 2011, a new record, however the Indian industry records sales in fiscal years, and the 2011-2012 fiscal is due to end in March with a 0% growth over the last fiscal. The Maruti Alto is the best-selling model in India for the 7th consecutive year, up 3% on 2010 and beating its own record at 311,367 sales. The 5 next models all see their sales slip down vs. 2010: the Maruti Wagon R at 147,299 units (-6%), the Hyundai i10 at 138,470 (-13%), the Maruti Swift at 127,916 (-10%), the Tata Indica/Vista at 99,900 (-5%) and the Maruti DZire at 99,515 (-4%).
The Mahindra Bolero at #7 with 96,340 sales (+22%) and Hyundai i20 at #9 and 80,571 units (+9%) are the two newcomers in the 2011 Top 10. There will be more in 2012: the Toyota Etios/Liva ranks directly 15th with 63,573 sales and the Hyundai Eon is already #26 at 27,144 units in just 4 months…
Volkswagen has had a record year, up 140% to 78,408 sales, with the Polo up 99% to #21 and the Vento up 317% to #23. Notice also the Hyundai Verna up 95% to #20, the Nissan Micra up 192% to #33, the Skoda Fabia up 97% to #34 and the Mahindra Verito (aka Dacia Logan) up 98% to #36.
In December, Toyota lodged its best-ever month in India at 15,948 registrations, thanks to more meaningful sales of the Etios family, breaking its ranking and volume record at #4 and 9,845 sales, including 4,399 Liva hatchbacks. Other December highlights include the Tata Nano reappearing in the Top 10 for the first time since May at #9, the Tata Sumo at its highest in at least 2 years with 3,243 units, the Mahindra XUV500 continuing to progress month after month, now #25 and the Skoda Rapid up 8 spots to #31 and 1,296 sales for its 2nd month.
