2012 is definitely a year to remember in India. After breaking all-time monthly volume records twice in a row in February and March, the market sees a new market leader for the first time in 8 years and only the third model in 27 years to manage to rank #1 in the monthly ranking: the Maruti Swift. Thanks to 19,484 sales and a record 8.9% market share, it passes the Maruti Alto at 17,842 units and losing almost half its volume vs. last month.
3. Maruti Alto: Indian #1 in May 2004 and from July 2004 to March 2012
The Alto had been #1 in India each and every month since July 2004 or 93 consecutive months, after beating the Maruti 800 for the first time in May 2004.
2. Maruti 800: Indian #1 from 1985 to 2004
1. Hindustan Ambassador: Indian #1 from 1950 to 1984
Before then, the 800 led the Indian market from 1985 to 2004 and the Hindustan Ambassador did so from around 1950 until 1984, possibly making the Maruti Swift only the 4th model in over 60 years to ever rank #1 in the monthly model ranking! Hyundai Verna
For the third consecutive month, Maruti monopolises the Top 4 with the DZire lodging another excellent score at #3 with 15,510 sales followed by the Wagon R at 10,247 units. The Hyundai Eon confirms its good shape at #5 while the Mahindra Bolero is up 3 spots on March to #6 and the Hyundai i20 is back in the Top 10 for the first time since last October at #9.
Maruti Ertiga
At #13 with 6,251 sales, the Hyundai Verna delivers its highest monthly volume ever, as does the Maruti Ertiga at a very impressive #16 and 5,464 units for its first full month of sales in the country, and the Mahindra XUV500 up 5 ranks to #24 with 3,403 sales.
